Pennies Still Accepted and Exchanged During Phaseout.

The U.S. Mint has stopped producing pennies, but this change won’t have any immediate impact on Gate City Bank or our customers.

Even though U.S. penny production has ended, you can still get pennies – and exchange pennies – at Gate City Bank. In addition, the bank will not round funds to the nearest nickel. We will continue to provide exact change on withdrawals.

The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia pressed the last penny on November 12, 2025. Because the penny costs nearly 4 cents to produce, discontinuing production is expected to save $56 million a year.

Pennies are still legal tender, like $1 coins or $2 bills, so the bank will continue accepting them. Customers can also continue to exchange loose and rolled coins for free. However, a fee does apply for customers who want to buy boxes of coins.

If you’d like to exchange your pennies – or count your change with our convenient coin machines – stop by any of our locations.
