Gate City opened its doors in 1923, becoming a pioneer in the Gateway to the West.

After a decade of growth, the bank stood strong with our communities, facing challenges together – from droughts to the Great Depression.

Support at Home & Abroad

At the dawn of World War II, more than 58,000 North Dakotans enlisted. Upon their return home, businesses – and the American dream of homeownership – began to boom.

As our communities grew, so did Gate City – expanding with new locations throughout the region.

After briefly expanding into Utah and South Carolina, Gate City returned to our ND roots with renewed focus on serving our local communities.

Despite the challenges of a recession and rising regulations, Gate City continued working tirelessly to serve customers – becoming the first in the state to offer adjustable-rate mortgages.

As the only mutually owned bank in North Dakota, Gate City maintained local control – allowing us to focus on long-term programs and invest profits back into the communities we serve.

Gate City Bank grew to 30 locations, becoming widely known for our exemplary customer service and fun culture – oh, and the best cookies in town.

In addition to making the most of new technologies, the bank continued leading the way with community giving and innovative programs, such as our BetterLife™ Student Loan – the first and only program of its kind in the nation.
